Pathway Social School—Roadmaps For Children With Autism and Social Communication Delays

Pathways is specifically designed to foster social and emotional growth in children ages 2 1/2 through 5 years.  The program is designed for children throughout the autism spectrum and those with similar social and emotional development delays.

Pathways Social School creates an environment where children of all developmental levels can focus on creating and maintaining positive peer interactions.  Pathways places increased emphasis on fostering social and emotional growth, while addressing developmentally appropriate academic skills.   In addition, each class will receive weekly speech therapy and music therapy.

Pathways Social School program is a fully integrated classroom. It offers typically developing children the opportunity to learn from and appreciate differences, while offering individuals with delays the opportunity to observe and learn from their typically developing, more socially savvy peers.

Looking for more ways to help your child with autism develop understanding and social skills that improve function in society? Using drama in this capacity is an emerging experimental field. Drama helps develop and practice understanding, communication, flexibility, and social interaction through confidence building dramatic experiences, “typical” peer interaction, and community support. “It is critical to recognize that in order to achieve the best possible outcome in real-life social situations, people with autism need to first practice social skills in controlled environments. Acting classes provide a ready-made setting for this type of practice.” (Davies & McAfee, 2004). This approach is globally gaining credibility as universities and professionals experiment empowering those with autism using drama.
